Sigonella – The Challenge

Directed by Flavia Triggiani e Marina Loi

Synopsis

A unique mix of true crime, spy thriller and political cinema: this is the true story of Achille Lauro and the infamous Sigonella crisis.

October 7, 1985 marks a crucial turning point in the history of NATO. For the first time, Italy, a longtime ally of the United States, is imposing its will, and the two countries come perilously close to a direct military confrontation.

The dramatic hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro by four terrorists provokes an international crisis.

Tourists and staff are terrified as a wheelchair-bound American Jew is brutally murdered, his body thrown into the water. News of the murder that took place on board is not immediately released. Later, the question of whether those who negotiated with the terrorists knew about this heinous act or not will be the subject of much debate.

Frantic negotiations for the hostages’ freedom follow in quick succession, leading to a standoff between Italy and the United States, between Italian and American soldiers, between President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Bettino Craxi, and between various members of the Italian government. Italy and the United States have a difference of opinion on the negotiations, and, once the hostages are freed, on how to handle the four terrorists and Abu Abbas, emissary of the Liberation Front. Meanwhile, many other countries become involved in the aftermath of this tragedy.
